The Fix is a curated news utility designed and developed exclusively for McDonald’s by FreeAssociation, in collaboration with MTV Networks. The Fix, which has deployed in multiple iterations, runs on MTVN sites including MTV.com, VH1.com, ComedyCentral.com, TheDailyShow.com and ColbertNation.com. The charismatic brand experience delivers content via in-page modules, video push-downs, rich media units, and as a Facebook app. In the summer of 2010, The Fix won an OMMA for best use of Video Appearing in a Banner, Expandable Banner or Interstitial.

In contrast to its clean and simple user interface, the DNA of this news utility is quite complex. Multiple CDN and blog sources feed content into a modular Flash unit, delivering timely, curated MTVN content to users. The stylish, icon-based carousel employs Papervision3D for z-depth sorting. Because this product is deployed across multiple MTVN sites, each with unique ad specifications, custom engineering and rigorous testing is required for each release.

McDonald’s has made an ongoing commitment to this custom content-sponsorship program. Each quarter, FA works with MTV Networks to add to the ad product feature-set and evolve the deployment method. 2010 enhancements included social media functionality on the in-page units and implementation of a new Video “push-down.”
